South Sudan Needs Supplies! (12.25)
The South Sudan Life Care Mission Needs Your Help!
In the heart of South Sudan, where challenges like poverty, conflict, and limited access to healthcare persist, one man’s extraordinary journey is making a profound difference. Joseph Deng, a survivor of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan, has dedicated his life to giving back to his homeland through the South Sudan Life Care Mission. As a member of Lakeview Church and a nurse, Joseph returns annually to his village, driven by a deep faith and a commitment to provide essential medical care.
Joseph’s Story: From Survival to Service
Joseph’s path is nothing short of remarkable. As one of the Lost Boys who endured unimaginable hardships during Sudan’s civil war, he knows firsthand the dire medical needs in his remote community. “God kept me alive and brought me to the US to be a witness and to give back,” he shares. “If I don’t help, then why did God save me?” This gospel-driven mission isn’t just about physical healing—it’s rooted in sharing hope through faith, with events like open-air preachings under banners proclaiming “Jesus: Hope of the Nation” (Romans 5:2-5). Supported by partners like Lakeview Church in Tarpon Springs, Florida, the mission has grown into a beacon of support. Photos from the flyer show Joseph and his team in action: examining patients, distributing supplies, and building community ties. And exciting news for 2025—a brand-new clinic is on the horizon, expanding their reach even further.
The Urgent Needs in South Sudan
South Sudan faces some of the world’s toughest health crises. Maternal mortality rates are the highest globally, life expectancy hovers at just 55 years, and there’s only one doctor for every 60,000 people. Alarmingly, one in four children doesn’t survive past age 5, with leading causes including pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, and malnutrition. Joseph’s clinic team, clad in matching yellow shirts, works tirelessly to bridge these gaps. But they can’t do it alone. The flyer emphasizes the critical need for basic medical supplies, which can mean the difference between life and death in a place where even simple remedies are scarce.
How You Can Make an Impact – The good news? There are tangible ways to get involved and help transform lives:
- Donate Medical Supplies: Even small contributions can save lives:
- Pain relievers: Tylenol (500mg tablets and kids’ liquid), Ibuprofen (200mg tablets and kids’ liquid), Aspirin (325mg and 81mg chewable).
- Allergy medications of all kinds.
- Bandages (Band-Aids) and wound care essentials, including triple antibiotic creams and hemorrhoid treatments.
- Anti-diarrheal and anti-nausea meds: Imodium (2mg pills and liquid), Pepto Bismol, and Dramamine.
- Specialized tools: Glucose monitors and strips, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, and stool softeners.
- Antivenom injections for snake bites—a common and deadly threat in Joseph’s village.
- Support Infrastructure Projects: Beyond medicine, the mission is tackling basic necessities:
- New Well: With the village exceeding 3,000 people, clean water is vital. The first modern well, installed in 2010 with Lakeview Church’s help, is still in use but overstretched. Donations for a second well would ensure reliable access for all.
- Solar Panels: For the new church built by Lakeview, solar power means fans for cooling during scorching days and lights for evening discipleship meetings and community gatherings. It’s about creating sustainable, comfortable spaces for growth and connection.
